In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Rob Labbe from American Global, a highly respected construction professional based in New York. Rob shared his extensive knowledge about the “Hike for Hope,” an initiative aimed at raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention, particularly within the construction industry.

Rob explained how the Hike for Hope originated from Dr. Vince Hafeli in Florida and has since expanded to multiple states, including New York, Georgia, and now Pennsylvania. The event not only aims to raise awareness but also to connect individuals with various mental health resources. Rob’s personal connection to the cause is profound; he shared his family’s tragic history with suicide and his ongoing commitment to supporting friends who struggle with mental health challenges.

Throughout our conversation, we discussed the alarming statistics surrounding suicide in the construction industry, where individuals are five times more likely to die by suicide than in workplace accidents. Rob emphasized the importance of open conversations about mental health and how initiatives like the Hike for Hope can help break the stigma.

We also touched on the significance of “Hope Coins” and hard hat stickers as conversation starters to promote awareness and support within the community. Rob’s passion for this cause is evident, and he encourages everyone to take action, whether through participation in events or simply by checking in on friends and colleagues.

As we prepare for the upcoming Hike for Hope events in Pennsylvania, we are excited about the positive impact we can make together. Rob’s insights and experiences remind us that we all have a role to play in supporting mental health and preventing suicide.
